Men......sigh....

The above is what happens when your husband doesn't check the legs of his sweatpants for stray socks when he does the laundry---especially wool socks that I had knitted for him.....

The question I planned on asking him was: WHY DON'T YOU CHECK FOR LOST SOCKS IN SWEATPANTS WHEN YOU'RE DOING THE DANG LAUNDRY?????

Okay, I know and appreciate the fact that I have a gem of a husband because he does all the laundry. But what happened was that I was picking up clothes off the floor by his side of the bed. And I noticed there was only one of his favorite house socks---the ones I knitted for him to wear with his house slippers in the mornings when he gets out of bed---a pair of socks which he had asked for. He loved them. And when I called downstairs to ask where the lost sock was, there was a long pause.....and then he sheepishly said: "I.... uh.... accidentally washed it. It was in one of the legs of my sweatpants."

When I took a deep breath in order to have enough breath to say WHAT!? YOU PUT A WOOL SOCK IN THE WASHING MACHINE???? AFTER I TOLD YOU TO NEVER, I MEAN NEVER, TO PUT ANYTHING I KNIT FOR YOU INTO THE WASHING MACHINE?!!!!....he beat me to the punch and pitifully said: "I know, I know....you have always told me to NEVER put anything you knit for me in the washing machine. (Is 'pitifully' a word?)

And his statement kind of burst my balloon of my planned flip out. So I simply told him in a normal voice echoing the same thing: "Blaine, I repeat---NEVER put anything I knit for you in the washer."

Blaine: "I won't."

After he went to work this morning my curiosity got the best of me and I went down into the basement. I found the sock and to my utter mortification I saw that he had been trying to stretch the sock out! He had stuck a beer can and also a tube meant to make oil and vinegar salad dressing inside the sock. But it hadn't worked. Most of the sock was felted. And it had shrunk to to the size that would fit an 8 year old.

Sigh......

(A tube to make oil and vinegar salad dressing??? REALLY? Lord have mercy.....)

Look at it this way...You now have a felted Christmas stocking for one of your cats next year. :) Probably not what you wanted, but at least you'll get some use out of it!

Thank you Allison!!! I hadn't thought of that. But it's a perfect idea and I'm going to do it!

I feel your pain! I made a scarf for one of my daughters, and wrote out care instructions. She washed and dried it and felted it into a tennis ball! The next scarf was made with washable sock yarn! Live and learn!

Yeah, that's why I make socks for the hubby and the kids that are Superwash wool. I KNOW that would so happen in my house if I didn't.

Beer can and salad dressing tube....Bwha ha ha ha! Thanks for the laugh this morning.

Mel :o)

Hi Jenn! I'll make a mate for the remaining sock (I still have enough of those yarns left)---but if anymore accidents happen, it's acrylic for him forever more!

Hi Mel! Yeah, it was one of those little plastic shaker bottles with lines on the side for how much oil and how much vinegar to add! You could have knocked me over with a feather. And it was kind of hidden, like he thought he could stretch it out and I wouldn't know!

Hi Susan! Thank you for asking! I've had some issues that have been taking up my time. But I should get back in the swing of things soon! :)

It's really a "guy thing", Bo. I made a pair for my boyfriend and he did the same thing. They just don't have the brains and know- how when it come to laundry. he always dumped everything in the wash together and washed with very hot water. That was the last pair for him! Deb

Hey Bo, I believe it is a "guy thing". I made a pair for my bf and he put them along with all his laundry in at once with very hot water. They just don't have the brains and no-how when it comes to that kind of stuff! That was the last pair I will ever make for him! They know how long it take for us to knit them because they're usually sitting right there while we're making them! Grrrrr! Deb

Bo, thanks for the BIGGEST belly-laugh I've had in months! Hahahahaha!!!! That is SO funny! But I swear, my husband is the same way. He has a total blind spot where laundry goes. Whatever's in the pockets, legs, etc. of his golfing pants gets washed in warm water, extra agitation, and hell-hot dryer settings...even his lighters. I'm just waiting for the day the dryer explodes from one of those lighters. AND I've told him if he EVER washes one of the socks I knit for him, he's had his last wool ones, too!

Well Bo, it was an accident... but as I've read, "trust in God, but tie your camel"... acrylic is the solution.
They do have very nice acrylic yarns, I've read... and if you have any favorites, I want to hear.

Deb, JennieP, and May---you guys are cracking me up! At least now I know I'm not the only one who has a husband who leaves stuff in his clothes before laundry time. He washed his whole wallet one time! And his car keys countless of times!

Hi girls,

well, you know... it's mostly women who raise their sons "not have the brains and knowledge to wash"...

I am a guy and I know how to wash - I've never ever felted anything by accident my whole life, I've never washed wallets, keys or lighters - or washed something red with my white laundry.

Why?

Because my mother taught me how to wash, to check all of my laundry for things that should not be in there and should not go into the washing machine.

And my grandmother taught her boys as well, so both my uncles know how to wash - and one of them used to knit, too.

There's no such thing as one gender being not able to wash, clean the house or do the dishes nor the other gender being not able to repair a car, assemble a piece of furniture or read a map.

That aside I'm sorry about the sock. I know I'd be mad if that would happen to socks or anything else I've made for someone. ^^;

I'm sorry Jaden. You're right---each sex can do all the skills you listed if taught. I really didn't mean to make a sexist comment. Please forgive me?

JennieP said...

Jaden, you are SO right. However, I've always said to my hubby, "If you're old enough to wear the pants, you're old enough to empty the pockets." I used to not even check and if something of value was washed, oh well. Now I've mellowed with age and I DO check the pockets . I've also told my daughters to do their future daughters-in-law a favor and teach their sons to cook, do laundry, clean the house and iron. Everyone should be self-sufficient.

I don't knit anything for anybody that would felt. And the is the only time I ever use the word NEVER. I NEVER knit with feltable wool for anyone else. Last time was a baby blanket "Girasole" in angora and she felted it and used it as a changing pad. Make some slippers and felt them first. That way he is SAFE.

Bo... said...

Hi Afternoon Moon!! Yes you are totally correct about not giving knitted gifts that would felt. But I took a chance with my husband because I lectured him strongly not to put them in the wash. I felt like I had "control" over the situation. But I never in a million years thought he'd do it by accident!!!

Jaden said...

No need to apologize, Bo... ^^ It was not your original statement that made me write my comment. ;P

And yes, I know some people never check their pockets - mostly if they don't have to do the laundry themselves. They can always blame whoever does the laundry for not checking first. It's much harder if you were the one to make the mistakes. ^^;
